History

LGA History

Since the 1990s, LGA principals have been active in research and advisory services and in advancing what has evolved into modern sustainability investing for a variety of organizations and clients, including the Investor Responsibility Research Center (IRRC, now part of MSCI Risk Metrics), Innovest Strategic Value Advisors (also part of MSCI Risk Metrics), and Eco Efficiency Associates (now part of LGA).

From a quantitative research base, LGA built a proprietary model relating various facets of corporate environmental management to shareholder value creation with support from a diverse group of stakeholders including: Union Bank of Switzerland, WASA Insurance, Georgia Pacific, the US Environmental Protection Agency, Washington Department of Ecology, and the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality.

1998 LGA was formed in 1998 and also advised IBP Fondkomission (now part of EFG Bank Group) on the first sustainability-oriented structured product series sold in Europe, the Global Eco Index™ series of principal-protected notes. These notes were the basis for investment by Swedish institutions seeking to incorporate sustainability into global asset management strategies.
1999 LGA was selected as a sub-advisor for a unit trust, the Environmental Leadership Trust™, sold by Nike Securities (now First Trust) in North America.
2000 LGA launched its signature Eco Performance Portfolio™, a large cap core product composed of companies LGA believes have done the best job of integrating environmental sustainability into their business models.
2002 LGA published the Profitable Correlation, which summarized 40 studies on which ESG variables are related positively to enhanced stock market performance and risk adjusted return.
2003 LGA developed a third party finance model for SunEdison (now part of MEMC), the top owner and operator of solar in the USA as of December 31, 2012.
2004 The California Treasury, citing LGA research, announced the Green Wave Investment Initiative, which committed CalPERS and CalSTRS to a multi-asset class sustainable investment allocation program.
2005 LGA won the State of Maine RFP for a specialist manager for the Baxter State Park Trust.
2007 in concert with Rhumbline Advisers, LGA won an investment mandate under the California State Teachers Retirement System (CALSTRS) Sustainable Manager program.
